Osteoarthritis is a painful condition that affects the joints in our bodies, causing stiffness, bone grating, pain and more. According to the NHS, Arthritis is the most common form of this condition in the U.K.
Osteoarthritis affects the joints and causes swelling, pain and more and occurs due to the protective cartilage around our joints being worn down which makes them difficult and painful to move and leaves them swollen and stiff. According to scientists and researchers, following a diet which is low in calories and rich in Vitamin K could help reduce the symptoms of Osteoarthritis. Researchers from the University of Surrey have said that following a diet which restricts calorie-intake and participating in exercises that focus on strengthening our joints as well as maintaining flexibility is perfect for relieving the pain in joints, especially for patients that are overweight.
Following a low-calorie diet and a healthier lifestyle will also lead to a lower cholesterol as high levels have been linked to the condition. Scientists also said that those suffering from Osteoarthritis should increase the amount of Vitamin K consumed. Greens are a great source of the vitamin, like Spinach, broccoli, cabbage and more. Eggs, fish, and meat also contain Vitamin K and are a good source.
Margaret Rayman, Professor of Nutritional Medicine at The University of Surrey said: “The importance of a good diet and regular exercise should never be underestimated,” and “Not only does it keep us fit and healthy, but as we have learned from this study, it can also lessen painful symptoms of osteoarthritis." She also added, “We are what we eat, and it is important that we have the right amount of nutrients from our food to ensure that our body systems work as they should.”
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the world and while there is no cure for the condition, researchers and scientists have developed methods to treat it.
